Caveat. The UTMB Index doesn't score every race in real time — some take weeks to land, others sit structurally outside the system. So a fast race may still be missing here.

      The Forecast · xCI

      The deepest fields.

xCI — Expected Competition Index. A pre-race measure of field depth, based on the top 10 UTMB Index scores on the start list. Higher = deeper field.

I only started tracking xCI in May 2026, and only for selected races. The list grows piece by piece.

      About
OCC 2025 · Chamonix First time meeting Jim Walmsley. I walked up and asked him where the bib pickup was. He looked a little puzzled — fair enough, you don't usually ask the long trail world champion where to find the registration tent. Best moment of the weekend.
"I get to be a fan of one of the most beautiful sports out there — and I'd rather geek out about the data than take myself too seriously."

Uphill Notes is written by Martin Biela — a trail and ultra runner based in Wiesbaden, Germany, near Frankfurt, with 28 years in marketing as a day job. The site is what happens when those two worlds meet: weekly rankings data, brand and athlete stories, and the occasional long read about where this sport is actually heading.
